Tuning a Ford Focus RS with the HP Tuners nGauge

We recently had the pleasure of visiting Burnyzz Speed Shop in Ocala, FL to watch Tony Gonyon of Tuners Inc work his magic on his brand new, Ford Focus RS.

First, we have to say this: Bone stock, this car is flat out impressive. It's glued to the road, accelerates hard, the brakes are borderline ridiculous (like, bruise your man boobs with the seatbelt ridiculous), and there isn't a single squeak or rattle. This car is LOCKED IN!

But as good as it is, like most new vehicles, the powers that be decided that they should squelch the fun factor, including boost limits in the lower gears and torque management galore. Boooo!

But Tuners Inc fixed all of that. Despite being a very hot Florida day with the stock intercooler, this car put down great numbers with an HP Tuners tune and the HP Tuners nGauge.

The HP Tuners nGauge delivered the power, through a clean, user-friendly interface.

HP Tuners VCM Suite, VCM Scanner and the HP Tuners nGauge gave Tony all of the parameters he needed to make changes and make power.

Baseline numbers: The bone stock Focus RS made a very respectable  294 HP and 327 FT Lbs of torque.

Red = Factory HP and Torque numbers. Blue = HP and torque from the first tuning revision.

Because Tony had already made a quick tune for the car, we made some back to back runs of stock vs. tuned. The gains, especially off peak, were already impressive, but we knew there were more gains to be made, even on a stock car with the stock intercooler.

The datalogs showed there were a number of factors limiting torque, including timing retard and boost retard. We'd call for more timing and it would pull it right back out. Some of this is due to torque management, but we were also dealing with heat soak and some pretty warm IAT2's.

VCM Scanner is the best in the business if you need run log data.

After some more logging, a quick phone call to our esteemed colleague Mike Thornhill at MPT Performance to exchange notes, and some collaboration with Eric Brooks at HP Tuners, we were able to defy the factory torque management and make more power.

Check out the video below to see the final power numbers. Remember, this only 6 degrees of timing with the stock intercooler. More to come!

Next up is a Levels Performance Intercooler and more tuning.

We'll update this post with future results. Look at the size of this thing!

That's a lot of cooling!

If you need Your Ford Focus RS tuned with the HP Tuners nGauge, send an email to Tony@TunersInc.com and he'll get you dialed in!

When your car is being tuned by someone who has the same car as a daily driver, the tunes have that little something extra.

If you'd like to resell the nGauge as a tuner shop, email Sales@FerraroSpeed.com

PS: This blog post just happened to fall on September 28, 2016: Tony's birthday. Happy Birthday, Tony!
